Dalwhinnie Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Dalwhinnie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in the village of Dalwhinnie, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1897 and is currently owned by Diageo. Standing 326 metres (1,070 ft) above sea level, it is the highest distillery in Scotland, and one of the coldest and most remote in the country.

History

Dalwhinnie began life as the Strathspey Distillery, built in 1897–98 by a partnership of John Grant of Grantown-on-Spey, George Sellar of Kingussie and the designer Alexander Mackenzie. The site was chosen for its abundant, pure water from the Allt an t-Sluic burn and its position beside the Highland Railway and the old military road through the Drumochter Pass. Production started in 1898, but the venture failed within months and went into liquidation. Later that year A. P. Blyth bought the distillery for his son and renamed it Dalwhinnie.

In 1905 it was sold at auction to the American firm Cook & Bernheimer, making Dalwhinnie the first Scotch distillery under American ownership; this arrangement ended with the introduction of Prohibition, and the distillery returned to Scottish hands in 1919. It joined the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1926. A serious fire in February 1934 shut the distillery for four years, and it did not reopen until 1938. Ownership passed to United Distillers in 1987 and, through subsequent mergers, to Diageo in 1997, which still owns the distillery today.

Although Dalwhinnie sits within the Speyside boundary as defined by the Scotch Whisky Regulations, it has long been marketed and is best known as the Highland representative in Diageo's Classic Malts range, reflecting its exposed, high-altitude Highland setting near the Cairngorms. A visitor centre opened in 1991 and the distillery remains open to the public.

Dalwhinnie's core range centres on the Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old (43% ABV), the distillery's flagship expression, known for its gentle, honeyed, malty-sweet character with heather notes and a light smoky finish — a hallmark of the distillery's slow, cold-climate maturation. It is complemented by Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold (43% ABV), created to be enjoyed chilled or over ice, and periodic special releases such as the Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition, which is double-matured with a finish in Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks for added dried-fruit and toffee depth.
