Macallan Distillery — Speyside Single Malt Whisky

Macallan Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on the Easter Elchies estate near Craigellachie, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and is currently owned by Edrington. Macallan is one of the best-selling single malt Scotch whisky brands in the world and is especially known for its long-standing commitment to sherry-seasoned oak casks.

History

The Macallan distillery was established in 1824 by farmer Alexander Reid, who obtained one of the first official distilling licences issued after the Excise Act of 1823. Built on the Easter Elchies estate overlooking the River Spey, the distillery began as a small farm operation before growing steadily through the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1892 it acquired its first large copper pot stills, enabling greater production, and from the 1930s onward it built a reputation for extended cask ageing, notably its 12-Year-Old expression, which set it apart from competitors relying on younger whiskies. Macallan's ownership consolidated over the 20th century, and in 1996 the distillery was acquired by Highland Distillers; in 1999 it became part of the Edrington Group, which also owns Highland Park and The Glenrothes. In 2018, Macallan opened a striking £140 million distillery and visitor centre designed by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, built into the hillside beside the historic Easter Elchies House. Today Macallan remains one of the most prestigious and collectible single malt brands, with rare bottlings regularly setting auction records.

Core Range

Macallan's core range is built around three main cask series. The Sherry Oak range includes 12 Year Old (40–43% ABV), 18 Year Old (43% ABV), 25 Year Old (43% ABV), 30 Year Old (43% ABV) and 40 Year Old (44–45% ABV) expressions matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned European and American oak. The Double Cask range, matured in a combination of American and European oak sherry casks, includes Gold (40% ABV), 12 Year Old (43% ABV), 15 Year Old (43% ABV), 18 Year Old (43% ABV) and 30 Year Old (43% ABV). The Triple Cask Matured range, using American ex-bourbon and European and American sherry-seasoned oak, includes 12 Year Old (40–43% ABV), 15 Year Old (43% ABV) and 18 Year Old (43% ABV) expressions.
