Talisker Distillery — Islands Single Malt Whisky

Talisker Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Carbost, on the Isle of Skye, in the Islands region of Scotland. It was founded in 1830 and is currently owned by Diageo. It is the oldest working distillery on Skye and the island's only large-scale whisky producer, known for a distinctive maritime, smoky, and peppery character.

History

Talisker was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, who leased land at Carbost on the shores of Loch Harport from the Clan MacLeod estate and began distilling the following year, in 1831. The MacAskill family ran the distillery until 1879, when it was sold to R. Kemp & Co. for £1,810. In 1892 a rail link brought raw materials and coal to the site more easily, and ownership passed through several partnerships before the distillery was acquired by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925, following the death of long-time proprietor Thomas Mackenzie. The distillery suffered a serious fire in 1948, which destroyed stocks of grain and casks, though little finished whisky was lost, and a second, more damaging fire struck the stillhouse in 1960, gutting the building. Talisker was rebuilt with five replica stills to preserve the original spirit character and reopened in 1962. Through subsequent corporate consolidation, the distillery passed to United Distillers in 1987 and then to United Distillers & Vintners in 1998, both predecessor companies that became part of Diageo, its current owner. Talisker remains in continuous production today and is one of the best-known single malts from the Scottish islands.
